【CNN】読んでるやついる?【ENGLISH EXPRESS】
CNN ENGLISH EXPRESS

The problems are beyond that of just ..."のthatは、
何を指すのでしょう?
対訳だと「問題」と訳しているように見えるのですが、私には直前の"global leadership"に思えるのですが。
どなたか分かりますか? >>528
In the given sentences, the word "that" is used as a demonstrative pronoun. It refers back to the concept mentioned in the previous sentence. Here, "that" is referring to the scope or nature of the "problems" being discussed. The statement implies that the problems being addressed are not limited to or exclusively the responsibility of the United States, China, or Europe. Instead, these problems are on a global scale, necessitating a worldwide effort for their resolution. The use of "that" in this context helps to emphasize the breadth and severity of the issues at hand. >>529

解答レスありがとうございました。「問題」なのですね。
指示代名詞のthatが新鮮な感じで目に止まり何を指すのか少し考えたら
よく解らなかったので訳を見ました。
「"The problems"だとthoseじゃないかな?」
と思ったのですけどね。そこで単数の言葉を探したわけです。
ところで>>529の
"The use of "that" in this context helps to emphasize the breadth
and severity of the issues at hand."
が今ひとつ理解できないのですが、thatを使うことがこのようになるのでしょうか?
※すみません、パソコンの前に座れるのが夕方までなのでレスは明日になると思います。 訂正
That refers back to "global leadership" and the need for it due to the existing problems. The phrase "beyond that of just the United States or China or Europe" is referencing the previous mention of the need for global leadership, indicating that the scope of the problems is such that it surpasses the capabilities or jurisdiction of individual nations or regions. The word "that" is thus used to connect back to the concept of global leadership required to address these widespread and severe problems. >>532
"But I also got to see that that can be kind of dark at times,
that it can break things."
that節が2回続いてますが、その中の主語でthatとitがあります。
これは同じことを指していると思われます。そうであれば、なぜ
言い分けているのでしょうか?
※主語の内容としてはマスク氏のリスクテイカ―であること、
イノベーターであること、そしてそれらを踏まえて「なるほど、
彼は物事を前進させているのだ。」(カッコ内は対訳から)と、
いうことと思います。 >>534
The use of "that" and "it" in this context is a stylistic choice. Using "that" initially helps to directly refer back to the specific idea just mentioned ("he is pushing things forward"). Then, "it" is used to continue referring to the same concept but in a more general way.
This kind of variation in pronoun use can help avoid repetition and can make the sentence flow better. It's common in English to use different pronouns or structures to refer back to the same idea, especially in longer or more complex sentences, to maintain clarity and readability. >>535

Oh my god!!!
You'd posted!
Thank you so much for your explanation!
I got it exactly!!!
Thank you!!!!!
すみません、レスいただいていたとは気づきませんでした。
本当に感謝感激です。
(上の英語でおかしかしいところがあったらご指摘頂けたら幸いです。トーイック700点レベルなものでして。) It would be beneficial for you to develop a habit of writing in formal English to improve your language skills. For example, consider the following sentences.
Oh my goodness!
I notice that you have made a post.
Thank you very much for your detailed explanation.
I have understood it completely.
Thank you very much. Thank you for your advice.
I understand what you mean.
I do want to develop my English skill.
So I will use formal sentences from now.
Today I want to ask you a question about a sentence from CNN EE.
In the January 2024 issue, page 40, the 11th line from the bottom,
"Even more so than for previous generations, our influences while
growing up were not limited to the people in our immediate physical
environment;".
The words "our influences" in this sentence isn't seen in Japanese translation.
How do you take this meaning in Japanese?
I'm looking forward to your response.
Thank you very much. Not only 'our influences' but also 'while growing up' is not included in the Japanese translation. The translation is too free. If I were translating, it would be as follows:
「成長過程で受ける影響は物理的に身近な人々を超えたものであった。」 It's kind of you to respond to my question.
Thank you so much.
The sentence certainly doesn't have 'while growing up ', too. I didn't see that. It was my bad.
As you say that, the translation isn't enough to tell the situation in Japanese.
Are these only careless mistakes of the translator, or something else?
I would like to know the "hidden" intention.
(Maybe, it is merely a problem of the character limit.)
I haven't yet read the articles in the magazine to the end, so I get back to it.
See you later. Today I want to ask you a question about a sentence from CNN EE.
In the March 2024 issue, page 111, the 12th line from the bottom,
'we have to fully appreciate 1,200 Israelis killed in an absolutely horrific terrorist attack
should be condemned and (the face) warrants a strong, aggressive response to protect
Israel and to allow Israel to protect itself.'
Before asking you, I've already asked "copilot".
'I think this sentence is a little odd. Why do I feel so?'
I am surprised that he/she answered politely, and I'm grateful for it.
Below is the answer.
'The sentence you provided indeed has some awkward phrasing. Let’s break it down to understand why:
“We have to fully appreciate 1,200 Israelis killed in an absolutely horrific terrorist attack should be condemned…”: The use of “appreciate” here is unusual. Typically, “appreciate” conveys a positive sentiment, such as gratitude or admiration. In this context, it seems out of place. Perhaps the intended word was “acknowledge” or “recognize.”
“…and (the face) warrants a strong, aggressive response to protect Israel and to allow Israel to protect itself.”: The inclusion of “(the face)” is puzzling. It appears to be a typo or an incomplete thought. The sentence would make more sense without it.
A clearer version of the sentence might be:
“We must recognize the tragedy of 1,200 Israelis killed in an absolutely horrific terrorist attack. Such an event warrants a strong, aggressive response to protect Israel and allow it to defend itself.”
Feel free to adjust the wording further based on the intended meaning. 😊'
Artificial Intelligence is exciting for responding to any questions.
Even though my asking is infantile one.
How about this?
