トムソンさんがまず指摘するのは、「3本足を持つ生物は見られないが、2本の足ともう1つの部位(尻尾など)の3点で休息する生物は多い」という点です。
この指摘の例が、ミーアキャットやキツツキ。ミーアキャットは2本の足と尻尾を使って直立して休憩します。
