『英語の点と線』(藤沢晃治著)という本で Kenji is my boyfriend. (健二は私の「彼」よ) Kenji is a boyfriend of mine. (健二は、ただの友だちよ) と書かれていた(和訳も同書からの引用です)のに違和感をもちました。
「両方とも米国人女性の発言です」と書かれていたのでアメリカの辞書 http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/boyfriend で調べてみたら、語義のトップに‘a male friend ’が来ていました。 2番目に‘a frequent or regular male companion in a romantic or sexual relationship’
