「what 以下の構造解説」
what は　先行詞を含んだ関係代名詞だよ。
もともとは　it takes (目的語）to do の文で
その質問文を例にとると
It takes courage to stand up and speak.
（立ち上がって話すには勇気が必要です。）　it が形式主語でto sand up　以下が真主語の文
この目的語　courage を一般的な目的語　the thing （もの）に変えて先行詞として　前にだすと
the thing which it takes to stand up and speak　（立ち上がって話すのに必要なもの）となる。
the thing which ＝　what だから　
what it takes to stand up and speak は　（立ち上がって話すのに必要なもの）という意味。
