(1) its genre resembles --- もちろん主語と動詞
(2) that of << a period, British soap opera >>
intended primarily for a female audience.
つまり、period はここでは "a period opera" というふうにつなげるための形容詞。
だから、"a period, British soap opera" は「時代物のイギリスメロドラマ」という
感じ。全体を訳すと、
「そのジャンルは、女性視聴者を主にターゲットにしたイギリスの時代物メロドラマ
のジャンルに似ている」
