Der Mord wird (★von★ der Polizei) untersucht. The murder is being investigated (★by★ the police). (Source: Bruce Donaldson, "German: An Essential Grammar")
V. Indicating the agent or doer. 14. Introducing the agent after a passive verb. The usual word for this is now by (by prep. 33), which was prevalent by the 15th cent.; of was used alongside by until c1600. Of is subsequently found as a stylistic archaism in biblical, poetic, and literary use, and in certain constructions, e.g. ‘on the part of’. (The OED Online, Third Edition, 2004)
つまり、1600年ごろまでは受け身の動作主を表す of は by と共に使われていた。 しかしそのあとは聖書や詩や文学の表現として使われるようになった。なおこのような of の用例としての OED による最近の例を少しだけ挙げておこう。
