あちこちの辞書を引いたけど、俺の調査不足かもしれないが、通常の辞書には載っていない
ように思う。4,000 ページもある The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary にも、あるいは
安藤貞雄の「英語イディオム句動詞大辞典」や、「リーダーズ英和、第3版」にも載っていないような気がする。

しかし、The Oxford English Dictionary (Third Edition, Online) には載っていた。OED Online には、定義文が
4行と、例文が（古英語での用例を含めて）16例も載っている。本当はそれをすべてここに紹介したいくらいだが、
著作権の絡みもあるから、仕方なくその一部だけを紹介する。古い用例も合わせながら、なるべく現代の
われわれにとって面白そうで、しかもわかりやすいものを選んでみる。
