There are discussions about whether or not smoking should be banned in public places. I believe that smoking should be prohibited in public for the following reasons. Firstly, tobacco is harmful to health but cannot be stopped easily due to addiction. Tobacco is obviously unhealthy not only to smokers but also to non-smoker's by second hand smoke. In addition, children may start smoking due to observing smokers. Secondly, cigarette butts left by some smokers on the street motivate others to litter. In fact, towns around Japan have become very clean since many locals stopped throwing away cigarette butts on the street. A clean environment can deter people from littering just like in Tokyo Disneyland. Lastly, cigarette fire is dangerous. There are many fires caused by smokers and sometimes a fire occurs from discarded cigarette butts. Also, lit cigarettes held by smokers in public places are very dangerous to others, especially children. In conclusion, smoking should be banned in public places for the stated reasons.
Do the advantages of gifted students’ grade-skipping outweigh the disadvantages?
There are discussions about whether or not the pros of gifted students’ grade-skipping outweigh the cons. I believe that the pros cannot outweigh the cons for the following reasons. Firstly, gifted students can go to specific elite private or national schools. In public schools where all students are allowed to enroll, gifted students might be bored. So, there are higher-leveled schools that are more appropriate and can meet their demands. Secondly, it would be difficult to nurture solidarity for grade-skipping students. Old friends are priceless all throughout life, but those students cannot share the same experiences with their peers leaving them feeling isolated. This situation could create an emptiness in their life. Lastly, gifted students can find time to pursue their interests individually. For example, a Japanese senior high-school student researched mosquitoes by himself to understand what attracts mosquitoes to specific humans. His research was highly evaluated, and he was admitted to Colombia University last year. In this regard, gifted students can explore their interests in their free time. In conclusion, the pros of gifted-students’ grade-skipping cannot surpass the cons for the stated reasons.
