Chapter XXXII I did not see Strickland for several weeks. I was disgusted with him, and if I had had an opportunity should have been glad to tell him so, but I saw no object in seeking him out for the purpose. I am a little shy of any assumption of moral indignation; there is always in it an element of self-satisfaction which makes it awkward to anyone who has a sense of humour. It requires a very lively passion to steel me to my own ridicule. There was a sardonic sincerity in Strickland which made me sensitive to anything that might suggest a pose.

The other day I went into the theater to see a Caesarian. Because it's rarely done it was full. Before starting Dr. C. made a short discourse. I didn't listen very attentively, but I seem to remember his saying that the operation so far was seldom successful. He told us that the patient couldn't have a child naturally and had to be twice aborted. The other day I went into the theater to see a Caesarian. を「先日僕は、シーザリアン(シーザーの芝居)を見に出かけた」と訳しているが theaterは劇階段教室、Caesarianは帝王切開手術と解釈するのが正しい 0009名無しさん@英語勉強中 (ワッチョイ f76c-FP8+)2020/11/26(木) 22:46:46.66ID:l/7gUiNq0 The other day I went into the theater to see a Caesarian. Roderick Hudson
Rowland offered several criticisms of detail, and suggested certain practicable changes. But Roderick differed with him on each of these points; the thing had faults enough, but they were not those faults. Rowland, unruffled, concluded by saying that whatever its faults might be, he had an idea people in general would like it.
“I wish to heaven some person in particular would buy it, and take it off my hands and out of my sight!” Roderick cried. “What am I to do now?” he went on. “I haven’t an idea. I think of subjects, but they remain mere lifeless names. They are mere words—they are not images. Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko says she will consider steps relating to the central government's "Go To Travel" domestic tourism campaign, while monitoring the situation of coronavirus infections in the capital.
Koike told reporters on Saturday that the metropolitan government has sent inquiries to relevant ministries and agencies to obtain details of the campaign's temporary suspension. She said she will consider what to do after receiving responses.
The central government has temporarily excluded the cities of Osaka and Sapporo from the "Go To Travel" campaign. Both cities are seeing a resurgence of coronavirus cases. The central government says it will consider how to deal with other cities based on requests from governors.
Koike has so far maintained that the Tokyo government is not in a position to ask the central government to temporarily suspend the campaign for the capital.
On Friday, she told reporters that suspension of the nation-wide tourism campaign should consider both travelers "to" and "from" the city and that's why the central government should make the decision. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20201129_01/

In the multipolar world of the 21st century, the major powers will inevitably compete, clash, and coalesce with each other in various permutations and combinations. Such a world, however, will lack the tension and confliction between the superpower and the major regioinal powers that are the defining characteristic of a uni-multipolar world. For that reason, the United States, could find life as a major power in a multipolar world less demanding, less contentious, and more rewarding than it was as the world’s only superpower.

That opinion is supported by what we know about the structure and Function of the various parts of the brain. In human beings, as in animals, the capacity for rational intelligence is located in the forebrain (telencephalon), and the emotional center is located in the more basal areas of the brain. These basal areas in man are not essentially different from those in the brains of the higher animals; however, there is a correspondingly enormous difference in the degree of development of the cerebral hemispheres in the forebrain. At the River-Gates

A novel by Japan-based Korean author Yu Miri has been awarded one of the most prestigious literary prizes in the United States. Yu's "Tokyo Ueno Station" won the prize for best translated work at the National Book Awards. The novel was originally published in Japanese in 2014. It tells the story of an elderly man from Fukushima Prefecture who had moved to the capital to work and support his family. Instead, he spends his days in Ueno Park. The novel depicts in detail the life of the homeless, highlighting inequalities widely overlooked by Japanese society during years of economic growth. Yu moved to Fukushima four years after the region was hit by the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident.

Somerset Maugham says that he believes there is not so much difference between the good and the bad, that is to say, he believes good people have vice and baseness and bad people have virtue and greatness.
Maugham found out that Goethe could not bear the idea that his father was a middle-class lawyer and sought to persuade himself that his father must be some prince. The editor of the copy he read wrote an indignant footnote but Maugham thought it was not uncommon. He realized that even such a great poet had snobbishness.
Maugham wrote he had met “crooks who were capable of self-sacrifice, sneak-thieves who were sweet-natured and harlots for whom it was a point of honour to give good value for money.” He was moved when he discovered the goodness of the wicked.
As mentioned above, Maugham observed and believed that the same person had lack of consistency and seemingly incongruous traits existed in him or her. What he wanted to express was the contrast that he had observed in people, namely, the wickedness of the good and the goodness of the wicked.

A state of things in which a large portion of the most active and inquiring intellects find it advisable to keep the genuine principles and grounds of their convictions within their own breasts, and attempts, in what they address to the public, to fit as much as they can of their own conclusions to premises which they have internally renounced, cannot send forth the open, fearless characters, and logical, consistent intellects who once adorned the thinking world.
Those who avoid this alternative, do so by narrowing their thoughts and interests to things which can be spoken of without venturing within the region of principles, that is, to small practical matters, which would come right of themselves, if but the minds of mankind were strengthened and enlarged, and which will never be made effectually right until then; while that which would strengthen and enlarge men’s minds, free and daring speculation on the highest subjects is abandoned.

Who can compute what the world loses in the multitude of promising intellects combined with timid characters, who dare not follow out any bold, vigorous, independent train of thought, lest it should land them in something which would admit of being considered irreligious or immoral? 0151名無しさん@英語勉強中 (ワッチョイ 5f6c-zMe3)2021/01/12(火) 16:39:29.65ID:PQTmAKUK0 I think this passage is very interesting.
Not that it is solely, or chiefly, to form great thinkers, that freedom of thinking is required. On the contrary, it is as much, and even more indispensable, to enable average human beings to attain the mental stature which they are capable of. There have been, and may again be, great individual thinkers, in a general atmosphere of mental slavery. But there never has been, nor ever will be, in that atmosphere, an intellectually active people. Where any people has made a temporary approach to such a character, it has been because the dread of heterodox speculation was for a time suspended. Where there is a tacit convention that principles are not to be disputed; where the discussion of the greatest questions which can occupy humanity is considered to be closed, we cannot hope to find that generally high scale of mental activity which has made some periods of history so remarkable. 0152名無しさん@英語勉強中 (ワッチョイ 5f6c-zMe3)2021/01/12(火) 16:40:38.02ID:PQTmAKUK0 Never when controversy avoided the subjects which are large and important enough to kindle enthusiasm, was the mind of a people stirred up from its foundations, and the impulse given which raised even persons of the most ordinary intellect to something of the dignity of thinking beings. Of such we have had an example in the condition of Europe during the times immediately following the Reformation; another, though limited to the Continent and to a more cultivated class, in the speculative movement of the latter half of the eighteenth century; and a third, of still briefer duration, in the intellectual fermentation of Germany during the Goethian and Fichtean period. These periods differed widely in the particular opinions which they developed; but were alike in this, that during all three the yoke of authority was broken. In each, an old mental despotism had been thrown off, and no new one had yet taken its place. The impulse given at these three periods has made Europe what it now is. Every single improvement which has taken place either in the human mind or in institutions, may be traced distinctly to one or other of them. Appearances have for some time indicated that all three impulses are well-nigh spent; and we can expect no fresh start, until we again assert our mental freedom.

The shore was fledged with palm trees. These stood or leaned or reclined against the light and their green feathers were a hundred feet up in the air. The ground beneath them was a bank covered with coarse grass, torn everywhere by the upheavals of fallen trees, scattered with decaying coconuts and palm saplings. Behind this was the darkness of the forest proper and the open space of the scar. Ralph stood, one hand against a grey trunk, and screwed up his eyes against the shimmering water. Out there, perhaps a mile away, the white surf flinked on a coral reef, and beyond that the open sea was dark blue. Within the irregular arc of coral the lagoon was still as a mountain lake—blue of all shades and shadowy green and purple. The beach between the palm terrace and the water was a thin stick, endless apparently, for to Ralph’s left the perspectives of palm and beach and water drew to a point at infinity; and always, almost visible, was the heat. ーLord of the Flies Chapter 1 The Sound of the Shell―

原文 Furthermore, in language, the relationship between the form of a signal and its meaning is largely arbitrary. For example, the sound of “blue” will likely have no relationship to the properties of light we experience as blue nor to the visual written form “blue,” will sound different across languages, and have no sound at all in signed languages. No equivalent of “blue” will even exist in many languages that might make fewer or more or different color distinctions. With respect to language, the meaning of a signal cannot be predicted from the physical properties of the signal available to the senses.

The Lion Grand Mother
My paternal grandmother was a fascinating woman. Her parents were from Chiba Prefecture but eloped and fled to Nagoya City in Aichi Prefecture. Her father worked as a day labor agent in Nagoya. The work is a specialized contractor who gathers day laborers for a construction company and puts them on the job site. In those days, this was mainly the work of the Mafia. It was one of the few kinds of work available to someone who ran away from home if he wanted to earn a lot of money. Her love of gambling, loyalty, and fighting was influenced by her father, who lived in the Mafia society. Surprisingly, one of her big brother's children graduated from the University of Tokyo, the most prestigious university in Japan, with a degree in engineering. Her father is the president of a staffing agency, even though he is a mafia member, so his grandchildren must have inherited his excellent blood. Nicholas Sparks Kazuo Ishiguro

Urashima Taro vs Hanasaka Jii-san
Once upon a time, in a village, there lived a young man named Urashima Taro and an older man known as Hanasaka Jii-san. Taro was famous as a hero of the sea, while Jii-san was renowned for his mysterious ability to make flowers bloom.
One day, the two competed for the same prize during the village festival. The prize was a mystical jewel said to grant wishes, bestowed by the village's guardian deity. Taro and Jii-san had important wishes they wanted to fulfill, so both were determined to win.
The village elder then proposed a solution. "Let's have a duel between you; the winner shall receive the jewel," he suggested. Reluctantly, Taro and Jii-san agreed to this proposal.
On the day of the duel, the villagers gathered, and the air was filled with tension. Taro used his swordsmanship learned from the sea, while Jii-san used his mysterious powers derived from flowers. The battle was fierce, with neither side yielding.
However, amid the fight, a mysterious light suddenly descended from the sky. The light enveloped both of them, astonishing everyone present. When the light vanished, Taro and Jii-san were seen holding hands, smiling.
The voice of the guardian deity resounded, "It is not conflict, but respect for each other, that determines the true victor." The jewel was given to both of them, and Taro and Jii-san vowed to use their power to cooperate for the benefit of the village.
