1913年に于山島は発見出来ず、謎の島だったと報道されていた。

韓国の新聞『毎日申報』の1913年（20世紀）6月22日付け記事には、
鬱陵島の島民が10数年前に于山島を探索しようとしたことが書かれている。
1696年の17世紀には朝鮮人も竹島（旧・松島）の存在を知っている、
竹島の編入は1905年02月22日決定。また編入はマスコミによっても知らされた。
1913年には、鬱陵島の韓国人が竹島を知っていたのは確実です。
韓国の主張『于山島は独島（竹島）の事である。』
于山島が現在の竹島なら、探索するまでもなく鬱陵島民は知っていて当然のことであるが、結果于山島は発見出来なかった。
彼等が于山島を発見できなかった理由はもちろん、
それが単なる竹嶼の忘れ去られた古名に過ぎないからなのです。

●無人島の探検中止。
鬱島郡西面在住の金元俊さんが、鬱島（=鬱陵島）東北40-50里の位置にある無人島の于山島へ移住するために移住民を募集して、その島を探すことにしました。
しかし、彼によると鬱陵島の島民が、10数年前にその于山島を共同で探索しようとしたものの、発見できなかったということです。
また、その島は海図に記されておらず、何度か探索船を出したものの発見できず、中止したそうです。　毎日申報 　1913.6.22

Below is a June 22, 1913 article from the Korean newspaper Maeil Shinbo (?日申報),
which reported that Ulleungdo resident, Kim Won-jun (金元俊), had ended his search for the uninhabited island of Usando (于山嶋),
which he believed to be forty to fifty ri northeast of Ulleungdo.
Forty to fifty ri would have beeen about 160 to 200 Kilometers using the Japanese ri,
which was the measure adopted by Korea in 1909.
If the Korean ri were being used, it would have been sixteen to twenty kilometers.
The article also said that Koreans on Ulleungdo had gotten together more than a decade earlier to search for the island, but could not find it.
This article is more evidence that Usando was not Liancourt Rocks (Dokdo/Takeshima) since Koreans on Ulleungdo would have known of Liancourt Rocks by 1913,
yet they did not believe them to be the island of Usando.
In fact, they believed that Usando was an uninhabited island northeast of Ulleungdo that was big enough to support a community of settlers.
Liancourt Rocks, however, is ninety-two kilometers southeast of Ulleungdo and does not have the water or soil to support settlers.
Old Korean documents and maps indicate that Usando was the old name for Ulleungdo's neighboring island of Jukdo (竹島),
which is about 2.2 kilometers off Ulleungdo's northeast shore.
Apparently, the residents of Ulleungdo in the early 1900s had forgotten the old name.
