さて、前回の問題を最終的にまとめたい。

このoneは文法上2つの解釈が可能だ。
①　one = a (historic) shift ＜代名詞＞　
②　one = 「ひとつ」「ひとつのもの」と訳すもの。＜数詞＞

このページに「Then a thought came over me, one which surprised me, but I didn’t resist it.」とある。これは、「一つの考えが私に浮かんだ（私を驚かせた"もの"の一つである）が、
それに抗うことはしなかった。」という意味で、一つしか考えが浮かんでない以上、「数ある中の一つの考え（a thought）」ではなく、数詞の「one（ひとつ）」（= one thing）なのである。
