In Abraham rooted religions, a single god is worshiped. However, most people in ancient times around the world worshiped multiple spirits or deities until they were influenced by Abraham rooted religion. Since Japan had not been invaded by any other countries until WW2 ended, Japan still maintain this ancient style of religion.
Now that all people can depend on science including medical technology so much, most people may not able to fully believe in spirits in nature, but Japanese in ancients times believed in curses by the spirits of both nature and dead people.
For instance, at any pandemic outbreaks of the smallpox in Kyoto, all citizens were able to do was just praying to deities in Shinto shrines. Anyway, Gion Festival in Kyoto is originated from people’s praying to ease the curses of people who passed away with unforgettable angers.
