ちらちらと少しだけ読んだことはあるけど、
まだまだ Joyce は僕にとって遠い存在です。
他の人からよい刺激を得ながら、僕も

Beckett は James Joyce に沈潜した人ですね。

今年のダブリンのOne City One Book って、
ロディ・ドイルで The Barrytown Trilogyっていう分厚いもの。
やっぱり、この辺で生きている大御所を出してきている・・・
でも、駅構内の宣伝は、セバスチャン・バリーの新作ね。
ダブリン市の図書館の多言語図書コーナーでは、独語や仏語はもちろんいろいろな言語のユリシーズが並んでいた。
アラビア語もあったが、日本語は見つからなかったが前にジョイスセンターに翻訳が逆さにおいてあるのを見たので
どこかにあるのだろう。

結構面白いのが、１９８８年６月１６日（木曜）にユリシーズの
レオポルド・ブルームが１９０４年の同じ日に通ったルートを
筆者（ Fennell ）が歩む話がある。

ジョイスの作品Ulyssesを理解するのに研究書や批評を読むことが
作品理解にこれだけ必要なのも珍しい。　他の英米の小説と大きく異なる。
Ulyssesって翻訳を読んですっきりできない小説だし翻訳では楽しめないね。
Ulyssesの為の必携書は、Don GiffordのUlysses Annotatedと
Weldon ThorntonのAllusions in Ulyssesだ。

ダブリンにある古書の老舗Cathach Booksが店の名を変えていた。
Ulyssesにね。ジョイス頼みってことか。

今、趣のある古書店は、なくなっている。面白かったのは２００５年頃まで
だったね。古書はネット販売だよな。
リーマンショック以降書店自体が減ったし紙の本より電子書籍という傾向も
ある。ダブリンの書店EASONではKOBOが展示されていた。あとEASONでは、
新聞の立ち読みし難くなっていた。立ち読みを控えてください
という立て札や貼り紙があちこち目だっていた。
フリーペーパーも減った。旅行者にはお得なダブリンバスの３Day、
５Dayチケット販売中止して値段上げてきたな。
昨年行ったときに３Dayをかったら、確かこれが最後って言ってたような。
３Dayって得だったが今はFreedomチケットだけど、あれは完全素人旅行者向けだし
面白くない。そして高い。縛られた観光向けチケットがフリーダム。
ぜんぜんフリーダムじゃない。最近日本語のおかしい奴って増えたけど「ぜんぜん」は、
否定形に使いますね。上の例にあるように、しかし漱石の時代、
作品に否定形じゃない「ぜんぜん」が今のように使われていたようだけど。

リバーダンスの新演目はジョイスでAnna Liviaだよ。ジョイス効果を狙い過ぎてるな。
なんかいやらしいね。ぜんぜん効果があがらないことを期待するよｗ

ジョイスのUlyssesって予言だよ。
聖書の引用、文学作品の引用が多いからじゃない。

舞台は、１９０４年６月１６日でしょう。
１冊の本になって出版されたのは１９２２年で、
今、２０１５年に読んでも新しく感じる。

JoyceのUlyssesを読んだ後では、人間の進歩のほうがすごくゆっくりと
感じる程だし今現在出された、
出されようとしている、他のどこの小説もつまらなく古く思えだろう。

但し、重要なのは翻訳じゃなくて原文で読むことだけど。
日本語訳では感じないな。
しかもこの小説は研究者などの学者の為のものではなく、
また勝者や成功者のものでもないところが新しいのだろうね。
不安への挑戦と敗者への賛辞で満ち溢れている。

このはっきりしないところが一般に読まれない
人気がない理由で隠れた異端書なんだ。

できれば、Hans Walter Gabler版のハードカバーで読んでもらいたい。
Gabler版のペーパーバックもあるけど、背の部分がすぐに割れてしまうしだめだな。
ハードカバー入手困難なところもいいなぁ

いろいろあるけど、
RTEラジオ１の３２枚CDセットもあるといいね。
聞きながら読めるし便利。車でもUlyssesを聴きながら運転。
あと視覚的にDVDも購入するといい。
実際のUlyssesと違うけど、アレンジの仕方や演技も面白い。
時々インターネットでYoutubeを見ることもお薦め。便利だねｗ
BloomやStephenの通った場所へダブリンに向かうのもいいｗ

かかっているね。
ダブリンのその場所や通りなどに因んだアイルランド詩人などの詩の
アンソロジーIf Ever You Goって売れたのかな。
まぁ　売れてないなｗ
この出版のときアイルランドにいたけど、ある新聞には、
「文学に興味がなくてなぜダブリンへやってる来る」という見出しだった。

この新聞広告を読む前にジョイスのユリシーズにも出てくる書店Hodges Figgisで
この本を買った。

ジョイスの作品は前にも書いたけど不安への挑戦と

アイルランド文学として
ジョイスのUlyssesを原書で読む前に最低限Oliver St John Gogartyの小説、
Patrick Kavanaghの詩や小説、W. B. Yeatsの詩、J. M. Syngeの劇を
原文で読んでおくことを薦める。
また、
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Manは、何よりも
優先して読むことは当たり前。
できればStephen Heroも読むといい。
Dublinersは時間があるときに気休めで時々読めばいいでしょうね。
とにかくA Portraitは絶対に読む必要がある。
原文で３回以上繰り返して読んでおくともっといい。
原文でA Portraitが完璧に読み込まれているとUlyssesは楽になる。

１９６８年出版、１９８０年再版の小説
As I Was Going Down Sackville Street by Oliver St John Gogarty への紹介文を読むと、
As I Was Going Down Sackville Street takes its title from an old unprinted ballad,
remembered by the author, and by James Joyce who recounted it to him.
It is a gallimaufry of Dublin life, the people Gogarty knew, the songs they sang,
and the places that make the city unique. ここまでは最高に良い。
特に、unprinted balladやgallimaufry of Dublin lifeなど読者に読ませたいと思わせる。
しかし、続くゴガーティの紹介が良くない。

ここもまだ納得がいく。結局優秀だってことだろ。しかし、次が最悪、
like W. B. Yeats, became one of the first Senators of the Irish Free State.
この部分はいらないな。イエイツを出すのも馬鹿らしいよなぁ　
作品の紹介はいいけど、人物の紹介は酷い。
作品と作家は別々だからと心得ている読者には問題ないが、
良い人物じゃないと作品も駄目だと考える何も分かっていない読書向けってことだな。
まぁ　ジョイスがUlysses中でBuck Mulliganをあんなふうに描いたのも分かると思うよ。
Ulyssesでは、他の小説と異なることとして登場人物が最高に多いってことで、
いろいろな職業のいろいろな人物が出現するけど、その人物の特徴づけが最高に面白いよね。
本当に、それぞれの人物にとっての預言書だよね。
ジョイスの作品中の人物を今の日本社会に当てはめると
最近の事件も予言されていたと考えずには入られないよねぇ

今回のダブリンでは、モリーの像がなくなっていたな。（また復活するのかぁ）
ダブリンへ行ったことないと分からないと思うけど、
モリーと言ってもユリシーズのモリーではない。
グラフトン・ストリートにあるMolly Malone Statueのこと。
毎年３月のセント・パトリックスデイに情報案内のボックスが出るところでもある。
何か新しくしようとしていたのか。
そう言えば、
セント・アンドリュウかサフォーク・ストリート辺りに可笑しいミュージアムを造ったようだ。
確かウイスキーか何かワインだったかな。変なミュージアム。ミュージアムっていう名の酒場かな。
トリニティー・カレッジに観光でも来た者からとるつもりだね。
もともとスミスフィールドにアイリッシュウイスキーのJamesonあるし、
たぶん誰もあそこへは行かないのだろう。
実際、１回行けばたくさんだし初めて行く旅行者はコリンズ・バラックス見て他へ行くな。
路面電車のルアスも影響していると思うけど、
ルアスが無かったときとルアスが出来たあとでは、観光の仕方も変わったんだな。
【注】として今、リーマンショック後の若い世代はカネに汚いと感じた。
何かを忘れている感じがしたよ。これってダブリンだけの話じゃないな。

日本人からすれば、アイルランドって観光の場所じゃないし
ダブリンへ行っても普通はつまらないだろう。
まぁ　教育産業で儲けようとしているみたいなところもあるね。
UlyssesやA Portraitなどの作品が示しているのは教育者って信じられない、ということだ。
まぁ　UlyssesやA Portraitを読んでいれば、だまされることもないね。
悪徳教育や悪徳産業に引っかかることもなしだよ。

だいぶ前にDalkeyの図書館が最新システム導入で綺麗になったなぁ
と思ったら昨年工事中だったDun Laoghaireのシアター・ショッピングセンターの後ろに
新しく大きな図書館が完成していた。
このダンレアリーにある書店Easonは変わらないね。
昨年の方が良かったかな。
ダンレアリーの町の夏ってかなり良いと思うよｗ
UlyssesってことではDalkeyやDun Laoghaireには、みんな行くでしょうｗ

スレ主さんは、恐らくかなり本格的に James Joyce を研究
してこられ、大学でもそれについて教鞭を執ってこられた
のではないかと想像いたします。さらには、アイルランドなどに
留学もされてきたのだと思います。

だから、James Joyce の周辺事情、
アイルランドでの書店事情やアイルランド国内事情、そして
James Joyce についてのどの研究書やどの version の
Ulysses を読むべきかなどについてのお話は、傾聴に値します。

ただ、ご自身が「日本語で読んでも本当には味わえない。
原文で読んで初めて作品の価値がわかる」と仰っている
からには、ぜひともご自身がここに原文を引用し、その
一語一句をぜひとも精密に解読し、その味わいどころを
僕らにお示し頂きたいものです。ここは英語板なので、
実際にはそれにしか価値はないと思います。

その原文のほんの1行だけでもいいから
厳密に分析したり味わったりする作業を

実際に英文をみんなで味わいましょう。
参加させていただきますよ。
僕は Ulysses を原文でほんの10ページくらい
しか読んだことがないけど、具体的にここで
議論が始まったら、参加したいと思っています。

ここは英語板なのであって、文学についての
雑談の場所ではないのですから。
実際に英文を味わう作業をしないと、
「原文を読んだふりをしていて、
しかも日本語でさえろくに作品を
味わってはいない自己満足のおじさん」
のスレになってしまいますから。
そうではないことをあなたが証明して下さる
のを、周囲の人は待っているのです。

もしそれを証明してくれない人だとわかったら、

もう充分Joyceの作品は味わっているので、
わざわざ英文法を捏ね繰り回す必要がないし
英文法じゃジョイスどころか洋書１冊に時間かかるでしょうし
Ulyssesの場合、今まで書いてあるようにDublinへ行かないと読めないよｗ

まぁ　英文法賛美者では簡単な洋書すら怪しいねｗ

この間ダブリンで買ってきたThe Most Dangerous Book
まだ１００ページ読んだだけだが、新しいこと書いてない。
こういうのって肩書きでものを書いているんだなｗ

Kevin Birmingham is a literary historian living in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, where he teaches on the History & Literature
program at Harvard. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in English
at Yale and his Ph.D. in English at Harvard. He was a bartender
in a Dublin pub featured in Ulysses for one day before being
unceremoniously fired. This is his first book.

最後の経歴の落ちが光っているが、内容はジョイスについての
今まで書かれていた伝記の集大成までいかない程度のもの。
やっぱり、こういう学者って安全圏でものを書くんだよねｗ

ジョイスについての伝記作家っていうと、Richard Ellmannや
Brenda Maddoxって必ず含まれるが、どちらも面白くないね。
Frank Budgenは結構いいかな。
それと素人ぽいStanley Gebler Daviesのほうがましｗ
Herbert Gormanを忘れてはいけない。ジョイスに指示されて書かされた伝記ｗ
脚色されていてバカっぽいのでゴーマンのは最高だなｗ

この小説The Lamplighterのヒロインはガーティ・フリントという名でそれが由来。

このように書くと、おおっ待ってましたとばかりに食いつく者がいるだろｗ
それだけUlyssesを原文で読みたいが読めない輩がいるんだよね。

ホース岬へ行ったことありますか。サンディマウント海岸へ行ったことありますか。
Star of the Sea教会へ行ったことあるかなぁ　教会内へ入ってみたことあるかなぁ
もう情景が浮かぶよ。気持ちいい位だｗ　　確かに夏の夕暮れは、ミステリアスだと思う。（きゃーと叫びたくなるよｗ）
この辺りの地形でLeahy’s Terraceより先の浜辺は、今、ないね。１９０４以降に
埋め立てされている。電車（ダート）でこの辺に行く場合は、Lansdowne Road stationで
降りて、徒歩１０分以内だけど大きなスタジアムに目を奪われているとすぐに迷ってしまい、いつまでも着かないケースが続出。英文にあるようにlingeredだね。
ここへは２回程訪れたけど、迷うなぁ
駅からタクシーで行く距離でもないのにいつの間にか３０分以上、誰もいないと１時間探し回るよｗ　この辺りの住人に尋ねながら行くと、まぁ３０分以内でいけるっしょ

兎に角、最初にジョイスのUlyssesへの審査、検閲を行ったのは、エズラ・パウンドだが、
パウンドがジョイスから第４挿話を受け取ったときに、その挿話は、気に入らなかったということだった。
“snotgreen” や “scrotumtightening” 以上に嫌いだったｗ
第４挿話（カリュプソー）は、Leopold Bloom が　エクルズ・ストリートのアパートから
朝食の買い物をし食事を済ませた後にアパートの裏庭へそして小屋へと、
He felt heavy, full: then a gentle loosening of his bowels. He stood up, undoing the waistband of his trousers.
パウンドは、この部分のof his bowelsやundoing the waistband of his trousersを青鉛筆で線を引き出版社へと送ることにしたらしい。
この挿話では他に３０行ほどの削除があった、という。しかし
ジョイスは “I shall see that the few passages excised are restored if it costs me another ten years,”　
と言ったのは有名だね。
パウンドは、なんと言ったかというと、
“You use a stronger word than you need, and this is bad art, just as any needless superlative is bad art.”

パウンドはUlysses検閲官だねｗ

どの出版社もJoyceのUlysses出版は、恐ろしかったんだな。
ウルフのところのHogarth Pressもビビッていたし、
出版社すべてみんなチキンだったってこと。（この頃の法についてもそうだな。）
Ulyssesで罰せられることをおそれてなかなか世に出なかったが、
Ulyssesを一度読んでしまうともうこの頃に他の小説家や詩人に
ものすごく影響が出でいた。

Virginia Woolf didn’t know it yet, but her own mind was just beginning to work through Joyce’s project.
Over a year later, after she had stopped paying attention to the installments in The Little Review,
T. S. Eliot dined with the Woolfs and couldn’t stop raving about Ulysses.
It was after that meeting that she confessed in her diary,
“what I’m doing is probably being better done by Mr Joyce.”

このときには、明らかにウルフは何をし始めているか自分自身に驚いていた。

その後、どんな小説も文学も少なからずジョイスに引きずり込まれて行ったが、
今でもジョイスを超える小説って、存在しないしUlyssesやジョイスの作品を読むと
他の洋書は、もうクズで読む気にならない。
まぁ　雑誌でも読む気分で最近の洋書を読む程度だよね。

T. S. Eliotが言った言葉が影響しているのかもいれないけど、

ウルフは、Ulyssesが嫌いだったけど影響を受けてというか、ヒントを得て書いたんだし
二番煎じ三番煎じとも言えるウルフの作品自体は、Ulyssesの足元にも及ばないし
低俗だよなぁ

Intertextualityでこんな面白い小説って他にない。
単にA retelling of Homer's Odyssey, set in Dublinというだけじゃ収まらないところが
いい。Dubliners やA Portraitとの関連性も他の作家と比べられない。
この作品群はFWも含めて最高。そしてジョイスの批評も面白い。
読めない奴って残念だと思うけど、逆に、この作品群を読んでもらいたくも無いな。
独り占めにしたくなる小説だな。

１日読んでいれば、４日で楽に読めると思うけど隙間時間に読む場合には
やはり、カリフォルニア・バークレーと変わらないのか。

大学の頃、バークレーの学生にこのA Portraitをどのくらいで読めるか聞いたら、
このくらいなら１週間以内と言っていたが、そんなものか。４日では少しキツイか。

ベネットカップ・レースで、ドイツ・メルセデスに乗ることになっていた。
前年６月１６日、アイルランドでおこなわれたレースで勝ち、人気があった。
ただし1904年６月１６日の優勝者はフランスのテリー。

Jappies? High angle fire,　日露戦争の際、1904年２月８日、９日の最初の
海戦（仁川沖）において、日本側の高角射撃はロシア艦の薄い甲板に対して
効果的だった（二隻撃沈）。

ジョイスの『ユリシーズ』ってCDもあるし、DVDもあるしすごいと思う
ネイティブでも読めない最高に難しい小説だから日本人にはとても無理なんでしょうね

DVDを観てからCDを聴きながらUlyssesを開くと少しは楽かな

ジョイスの「ユリシーズ」からは、英語の勉強という感覚ではとてもついていけないだろうし
たんに英語が得意というレベルじゃ、読破できない小説だから

逆にこの作品を楽しんで読めれば英語や語学は卒業と言ってもいい
