下の英文なのですが、

to our chargrin 以下の構造がよく分かりません。
lies（主語）+outpace（他動詞）だと思うのですが、そうするとbespokeの主語はどこなのでしょうか。
またbespokeは辞書には他動詞の用法しか載ってないのですが、本文で使われているのは自動詞のようで、これも分かりません。
