China would be enraged if he were even to hint that its behaviour might be a cause for Japanese concern. Mr Abe has given only one possible example: joining allies to end a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, through which flows much of the oil on which Japan depends.
Mr Abe may take heart from China’s relatively muted response so far. Though state media in China have issued their usual warnings about a revival of Japanese “militarism”, its government has moved in recent months to restore stability to an often turbulent relationship with Japan.

In 1971 Peter Diamond, an American economist, showed that even small “search costs”, such as the time it takes to walk down the street to see what is on offer at a rival shop, can seriously undermine competition on price. Industries in which it is much harder to compare offerings and switch providers can expect sky-high prices and profits. In the past, this problem was acute in the insurance market. Many consumers, on discovering their insurance was running out, would lazily renew with their existing provider. The hassle of comparing competing offers, and the need to maintain coverage without interruption, hindered competition. That allowed firms to hike prices for existing customers.

The hassle of comparing competing offers,・・・,hindered competition.
In Japan, where a sluggish economy has left men feeling more insecure, few can pluck up the nerve to ask women out. This has ensured a plunging birth-rate, a thriving sex-toy market and a booming “relationship replacement” industry, in which women are paid to serve drinks and listen attentively, like modern-day geishas. http://www.economist.com/news/books-and-arts/21657362-luv-u-l8r/

The costs of searching are divided into external and internal costs (Smith et al. 1999). External costs include the monetary costs of acquiring the information, and the opportunity cost of the time taken up in searching. External costs are not under the 【consumer's】 control
Rational consumers will continue to search for a better product or service until the marginal cost of searching exceeds the marginal benefit.

(辞書を見たら、そういう意味が載っていた) an adjectival sense of fly as 'clever', which in British English carries connotations of being sneaky or dishonest (hence the idea of sneakily putting something somewhere).

Job experience helps develop economic literacy. Lowering the voting age to include people who lack such experience would do more harm than good.

Just now the BJP may be hunting for a new grievance. The Supreme Court recently issued a ruling that had the effect of depriving it of its favourite cause, by clearing the way for a Hindu temple to be built at the site of the demolished mosque in Ayodhya. The citizenship ruckus appeals to the party for the very same reasons that it has prompted widespread alarm. The plan to compile a register of genuine Indians as part of a hunt for foreign interlopers affects all 1.3bn people in the country. It could drag on for years, inflaming passions over and over again, as the list is compiled, challenged and revised. Just how the register will be drawn up, and what the consequences of exclusion are, remain woolly. Indeed, Mr Modi is already claiming it has all been misunderstood. Meanwhile, the hullabaloo helps reinforce the notion, so electorally valuable to the BJP, that Hindus, although about 80% of the population, are threatened by shadowy forces that it alone has the courage to confront. 0676名無しさん@英語勉強中 (ワッチョイ a3e3-tMIY)2020/05/23(土) 15:51:57.14ID:ABYjZUfb0 Just now the BJP may be hunting (for a new grievance).
The Supreme Court recently issued a ruling [that had the effect ((of depriving it (of its favourite cause))), <<by clearing the way (for a Hindu temple) <to be built ((at the site of the demolished mosque (in Ayodhya)))>>>].
The citizenship ruckus appeals (to the party) (for the very same reasons [that it has prompted widespread alarm]).
The plan (to compile a register of genuine Indians) ((as part of a hunt (for foreign interlopers))) affects all 1.3bn people (in the country). 0677名無しさん@英語勉強中 (ワッチョイ a3e3-tMIY)2020/05/23(土) 15:52:42.78ID:ABYjZUfb0 It could drag on (for years), ((inflaming passions (over and over again))), [as the list is compiled, challenged and revised].
[Just how the register will be drawn up], and [what the consequences (of exclusion) are], remain woolly.
Indeed, Mr Modi is already claiming [it has all been misunderstood].
Meanwhile, the hullabaloo helps reinforce the notion, ((so electorally valuable (to the BJP))), [[that Hindus, (although about 80% of the population), are threatened ((by shadowy forces [that it alone has the courage (to confront)]))]].
The Communist Party, he (= Mr Mitter つまりこの本の著者) writes, has been striving to convince domestic and global audiences that Japanese atrocities, especially the Nanjing massacre, should rank among the era's worst abominations. Galling for many Chinese, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki often seems to command more sympathy than the suffering inflicted on them.
